Open House Chicago
Client: Chicago Architecture Center
Duties: mobile interface design
During Open House Chicago, over 100 sites across the city open their doors to the public to allow them to discover the amazing architecture the city has to offer. With so many sites across the entire city, the Architecture Center was in need of an easy way for attendees to navigate the event on their phone.
While designed as a mobile experience, it was developed as a progressive web app, which allowed CAC to create an experience that feels like an app to the end user without the added costs. The Open House Chicago app gives attendees an easy way to discover sites and events, save favorites, follow pre-made routes, or create and share custom itineraries.
Chicago is often referred to as a city of neighborhoods, with 77 officially recognized community areas that each have their own unique character. Every year, CAC selects a rotating selection of neighborhoods to feature.
While Google Maps integration was used for all other maps, for the neighborhoods, an SVG map of the neighborhood areas was tranformed into a clickable map. I used this design as an inspiration for references at the top of the homepage as well as the neighborhood detail page.

Having an easy access to a list of sites and having the ability to search them by name, neighborhood, and simply as a list is a helpful organizational tool.
